I have just returned from competing in the Lanzarote Ironman, it was fantastic and i highly recommend any triathlete to give it a go, Yes it is tougher than Hawaii, but just as enjoyable at the same time!
Hire a car at the airport from Orlando carhire,follow the signs for yaiza to get out of the airport!! I advise you stay in Puerto del Carmen, plenty of nice apartments, villas close to the beach swim start, I stayed at Arena Dorada Apartments, they were perfect, the registration & pasta party are at Club La Santa, on the otherside of the island, 30 mins away, easy by car or there is a complimentary bus for Club la Santa from the town. The whole event is well organised, supported and very friendly, The swim is 2 laps and quicker than you estimate! The bike is hilly, windy and tough but if you train in the hills like me no problem, and the run is 4 laps of the promanade which isnt flat! but well supported.
I survived it in 13 hours 52 mins and was very happy! Advice - get the sand off your feet after the swim transition! slap on high factor suncream for the bikeride, have your own food for the run, as you will get sick of banana, orange & power gels! smile at the finish line! when you get there…its such a brilliant feeling! on the way home the canisters of C20 for tyre inflation will be taken off you at the airport so dont hide them in you bike bag! I had my Ironman tatoo done out there at Alexandras on the main street by Mc donalds in Puerto del Carmen the best souvenier I could think of! Happy training, Paula Tunnadine
