La Gomera is an island in the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the autonomous Spanish community of the Canaries. Together with La Palma and El Hierro it forms the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
San Sebastian de La Gomera is the capital. There are 22,259 inhabitants (2008) on the island and is the only one of the Canaries whose population has declined since the 1950’s from 50,000.
La Gomera stands out for its laurel forests, famous throughout the world. The Garajonay National Park here was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage of Humanity site.
