Situated on a cliff, the San José Castle was built by King Charles III in 1771 to
defend the island against attacks from Berbers and pirates. Two hundred years later, in
1976, it was opened as an international museum of contemporary art featuring a large collection
of works by Canary and local artists.
The renovation by César Manrique is faithful to the original interior, with only a
restaurant added on the bottom floor.
