Teguise, the capital of Lanzarote up to 1852,
has become one of the most important cultural and tourist centres
on the island. Its streets with palaces, convents and squares
preserve the unmistakable flavour of the passage of the centuries
and narrate a thousand and one stories. Skirmishes bwetween
Moors and Christians and filibuster attacks, among other events,
marked the history of this splendid town.
Teguise is located in the centrer of the island, 10 Km. from
the coast and about 220 m. above sea level.

| In 1418, Maciot de Bethencourt first
demarcated the town's boundaries making Teguise the first
urban centre in the Canary Islands. Its domestic architecture
can still be seen in the beautifully restored palaces
and stately homes such as the Spínola Palace. Among
the religious buildings are Ntra. Sra. de Guadalupe church
and the convents of St. Domingo and San Francisco. And
on top of Guanapay volcano sits the old castle of Santa
Bárbara. |

In the 1980´s Teguise
was declared a combined architecturally historic-artistic
centre as one of the oldest and most beautiful villages
in the Canaries and is considered by both locals and visitors
as a living museum.
Moreover, la Villa de Teguise is one of the main cultural
and tourist centres on the island. One of its most popular
events is the Mercadillo. |

Teguise offers its visitors
the opportunity to shop for gifts in the many crafts shops
and bazaars.
Besides, every Sunday morning, the entire village turns
into a grand open air market where shoppers can browse
among the stalls of wares from artifacts to home made
bread, all animated by groups of folk dancers and singers
in native costume.
