XIII Visual Music Festival of Lanzarote.

The Visual Music Festival of Lanzarote is a meeting point for contemporary music, a unique event of this characteristics in Europe.

The Visual Music Festival of Lanzarote, an international event organised by the Lanzarote Island "Cabildo" (Council), prides itself on being a platform for so-called "new" music.

Two spectacular volcanic lava "bubbles" are turned for the occasion into modern auditoriums which, year after year since December 1989, have been home to the festival. The Visual Music Festival of Lanzarote, the only one of its kind in Europe, is holding its thirteenth edition this year, 2002.

The landscapes and peculiar atmosphere that pervade the island make it the ideal place to appreciate the delicate rhythms of the compositions of the avant-garde artists invited every year, all of whom, shunning convention, are firmly committed to exploring new avenues for music.

Once inside Cueva de los Verdes or Jameos del Agua, the audience, under the spell of these natural auditoriums, becomes expectant, sensitised to the promise of suggestive and innovative sounds. Indeed, the leitmotif common to each and every edition of the festival, the striking, plastic beauty of the island of Lanzarote, is what creates such a very special sensorial harmony between the surrounding landscape and the festival's musical content. Each performance, in itself an aesthetic risk, involves not only music but also plastic elements in the mise en scène, therefore the term "visual music".

A characteristic feature of the festival is the contribution by plastic artists of renown to the creation of the visual component of the performances and set design, in keeping with both the venue and the music performed.

Year after year, new venues have been incorporated for the development of concerts, such as Volcán del Cuervo, "Rofero" de la Montaña de Tahiche, the Playa del Reducto in the heart of Arrecife and, for the first time this year, the Convento de San Francisco in Teguise
