ASH EMISSIONS FROM THE ICELANDIC VOLCANO EYJAFJALLAJOKULL SUBSIDE
1 June 2010 – 11:12
Reykjavik´s Meteorological Institute reported this Sunday that activity from the subterranean volcano of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, in southern Iceland, which has been emitting ash into the atmosphere for more than a month, has subsided.
A spokesperson for the organisation reported that no lava or ash emissions have been detected since this Saturday on the surface of the volcano and added that the cloud covering the area consists of water vapour.
The Icelandic authorities also added that it is “a little premature to declare the eruption over” and also stated that a possible end to activities does not guarantee that another eruption will not occur.
Eyjafjallajokull began erupting on April 14, and initially caused serious disruption to European air traffic, which has reoccurred intermittently across the whole continent.
