Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

The event was a resounding success as more than 4,000 samples of Lanzarote’s Denomination of origin wines and tapas were served.

Last Saturday 4th June, some 1,500 people gathered in the luxury port of the Marina Rubicón to celebrate the new Food & Wine festival. During the five hours of the festival more than 4,000 samples of Lanzarote’s excellent Denomination of origin wines and tasty tapas were served to an extremely appreciative public.

The figures just go to show the success of the event which was organised by the Regulating Council of Lanzarote’s Denomination of Origin wines in conjunction with the Marina itself and the island Council’s “Savour the Flavour of Lanzarote” campaign and also with the support and collaboration of the Yaiza town hall and Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce.

The festival, which is the second of its kind to be celebrated on the island after last November’s festival in the marquee at Teguise, was held with the participation of eleven local wine producers; El Grifo, Guiguán, La Geria, Los Bermejos, Martinón, Reymar, Rubicón, Stratvs, Tierra de Volcanes, Vega de Yuco y Vulcano de Lanzarote and five restaurants; La Casa Roja, Casa Brígida, Lanis, El Maño and Afrodite.

Throughout the morning entertainment was provided by the lively sounds of a batucada percussion band, and there were several raffles in which the lucky winners won bottles of Denomination of Origin wines.

EL GRIFO WINE IS GOLD MEDAL WINNER AT THE 2011 WORLD OF MALVASIA WINE COMPETITION CELEBRATED IN CROATIA.

Monday, May 16th, 2011

It was the only Spanish wine awarded a prize and it received the third highest mark.

The Canarian El Grifo wine was the only Spanish wine to be awarded a prize at the 2011 World of Malvasia Wine Competition. This world-renowned competition, sponsored by the International Vine and Wine Organisation (OIV), took place recently in Croatia. The local Lanzarote-produced wine was given the third highest score in the competition, winning a total of 89.83 points.

The El Grifo wine with its delightfully strong aroma is both complex and persistent. It is a blend of traditional wines from three vintages; 1956, 1970 and 1997. This sweet malvasia was made using grapes which had been slightly ‘raisined’, that is allowed to dry whilst still on the vine then the fermentation process was halted by the addition of vinic alcohol.

It is the second time that a Canarian Malvasia wine has received such a high accolade in this International Malvasia Competition, after also receiving an award in 2009.

This is the third gold medal won so far this year by the El Grifo winery, a Lanzarote Denomination of Origin producer, in competitions held by the International Vine and Wine Organisation.

2010´S GRAPE HARVEST HAS PRODUCED "EXCELLENT" DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN WINES

Monday, March 14th, 2011

More than a hundred people attended Bodegas Rubicon vineyard for the presentation and tasting of the exquisite wines produced from last season’s harvest.

The 2010 grape harvest has produced some “excellent” Denomination of Origin wines according to the chairman of the Regulatory Board Javier Betancort at the presentation in the Bodegas Rubicon winery last Friday. More than a hundred people had the opportunity to taste and enjoy the most recent wines produced in Lanzarote.

It is only the third time in the 17 years since the Regulatory Board was created that Lanzarote Denomination of Origin wines have been awarded a rating of “excellent” by the tasting committee. The committee tasted a selection of twenty-five 2010 vintage wines, including ten dry malvasias, six semi-sweet whites, four rosés, three tinto joven reds, a sweet malvasia and a sweet muscatel.

Javier Betancort briefly went over the main facts and figures relating to the sector’s productivity in 2010; a year in which the grape yield barely reached a million and a half kilos – a million less than the average year, but nevertheless a year when sales increased by some 32% on the previous year. Some 1,930,869 back labels were supplied by the Regulatory Board to the 17 member wine producers so that each and every bottle could boast the distinctive logo identifying its quality as a Lanzarote Denomination of Origin wine.

The chairman of the Regulatory Board accredited the positive upturn to the joint action undertaken by the Canarian government, Lanzarote’s inter-island council, the Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce and the Regulatory Board itself, which have worked together to promote Lanzarote wines as a valuable marketing tool to attract quality tourism to the island.

The Cabildo’s Agriculture Councillor, Nereida Pérez, also addressed the presentation and thanked the efforts and collaboration of all those involved in the island’s wine producing sector. She also took the opportunity to underline the importance of the Food & Wine Plan promoted by the Cabildo which has contributed to the promotion of Lanzarote wines as a tourist attraction.

The presentation of the 2010 Vintage evaluation included speeches by wine experts Tomás Pérez (El Grifo vineyard), Alberti González (Stratvs vineyard) and Alejandro Felipe (La Geria vineyard) who summarized the qualities of the excellent white wines, rosés and red wines produced in Lanzarote this year.
