Declared a protected zone, La Geria encompasses the municipalities of Tinajo, Yaiza, Tías, San Bartolomé and Teguise. This spectacular agricultural area is noted for the peculiar way of cultivating grapevines: first the land is cleared, fertile soil is laid, covered with picón (lava gravel) then stone walls are built around the vines to protect them from the strong winds.
