What should you keep in mind about the wind in Lanzarote for your holiday on the island?

What types of winds are there in Lanzarote and what are they called? 

In Lanzarote it is not possible to establish an estimate of the winds as it happens in other islands of the archipelago. Having a fairly flat but mountainous relief with an elevation above 500 meters, different thermal floors can be found on the island.

In general, Lanzarote has a fairly uniform temperature and humidity rate throughout the year. As for the winds, those that are from the northeast or the north predominate.  They are usually mild during autumn and winter, but their strength increases considerably in spring and summer. In fact, it is precisely in these two seasons when the so-called “trade winds” enter, one of the most popular and characteristic winds of the island of Lanzarote. 

However, despite the fact that the trade winds are the best known, there is a wide variety of types of winds in Lanzarote:

• Trade winds: it is the most common wind in the Canary Islands because it is generated by the presence of high pressure at the parallel 30ºN and 30ºS. In the case of the Canary Islands, and more specifically in Lanzarote, the trade winds are characterized by the presence of a mass of cold and humid air on the one hand, while on the other hand it has a mass of warm and dry air that is at more than 1,500 meters of altitude. 

The presence of these two different layers of air causes there to be a warm layer on top of a colder one, thus preventing the development of clouds and generating upward movements of air that produce small clusters. 

• Eastern Saharan: as the name suggests, these winds come directly from the Sahara. They are dry, warm and dusty, which is known as calima. You can usually switch between wind at low levels (by moving away from the Azores anticyclone) and wind at high levels (during the warmer months of the year). 
• Polar maritime wind: this type of wind can originate because the Azores anticyclone at higher latitudes and becomes more extensive or because a strong storm is at latitudes of 40ºN. In both cases there is the presence of clusters and nimbostratus usually accompanied by rains. In addition, a general temperature drop is usually generated in the northern part of the island. 

 

Where is it less windy in Lanzarote?

The wind in Lanzarote is changing and even sometimes unpredictable. However, in general, the southern part of the island is usually less windy than the north due to the direction of the trade winds and the mountains that act as a shield against the southern zone. 

Forthis reason, in the southern area are located precisely some of the most touristic points of the island (such as Playa Blanca).

What is the evolution of the wind in Lanzarote by months?

Wind, to a large extent, depends on the topography of the area and other factors that can influence its speed, direction, and warmth. In addition, in Lanzarote the wind suffers variations in speed according to the season of the year. 

In general, the windiest time of the year is usually from the end of May to the beginning of September, in which it can reach a speed of more than 23 kilometers per hour. July is usually the month where the wind speed is usually higher in Lanzarote. 

On the contrary, the calmest time in terms of winds is usually from the beginning of September to mid-May.  The month with the least wind in Lanzarote is usually October.
