And the oldest?
Among Lanzarote’s churches, one of the oldest and most important on the island is Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, in Teguise, which was reformed and enlarged in the 17th century, but was built on top of two earlier churches (the first construction is thought to date back to the 15th century).
The current building is a reconstruction and its white dome is one of the symbols of the municipality of Teguise, the former capital of Lanzarote.
Another of Lanzarote’s oldest churches is San Ginés, the oldest parish church in Arrecife, which was built in 1574.
What characterises the architecture of the churches?
The churches of Lanzarote share certain stylistic elements. For the most part, they are single-aisle churches, with white painted exterior walls.
Many structures have buttresses on the side walls, where we can also find stone benches. They usually also have a wooden entrance arch and an adjoining sacristy, but only a few of the churches in Lanzarote have a bell tower.
The interior fittings are quite simple and many have visible wooden ceilings, inspired by Mudejar architecture.
The hermitages are usually enclosed by a wall to protect them from the wind.
