Los Ajaches Natural Monument is a volcanic formation made up of a 7.5 kilometre long massif and stony plains, although we can also find caves, engravings and other traces of the ancient inhabitants of Lanzarote.
This area is still subject to erosion, creating spectacular ravines and cliffs that protect some of Lanzarote’s most beautiful beaches.
The combination of high peaks, such as La Aceituna or Las Hachas Grande and Chica, with ravines and cliffs, such as those at Papagayo, Mujeres or Caleta del Congrio, among others, is incredible.

The Los Ajaches Natural Monument covers the whole of the south of the island. It extends from Punta del Papagayo to Playa Quemada, in the municipality of Yaiza.
It covers an area of more than 3,000 hectares.

Los Ajaches was formed eleven million years ago, making it the oldest area on the island. According to various geological studies, the initial height of these volcanoes could have reached 4,000 metres, more than the height of Mount Teide, the highest point in Spain.
In 1987 it was declared a Natural Park of National Interest and in 1994 it was declared a Natural Monument.
Its rich landscape is one of the most important in the Canary Islands, not to mention the scientific interest generated by its palaeontological sites.
