Map of Lanzarote’s villages
The 3 most important villages and their location, inhabitants and interesting data
On your trip to Lanzarote you have the opportunity to get to know its origins and traditions through its villages. We have selected just three that we know will not leave you indifferent:
- Villa de Teguise. It is a town located in the north-central part of Lanzarote with just over 1,700 inhabitants. It was one of the first towns founded in the Canary Islands and was the capital of Lanzarote until 1847. Its architecture is of great artistic and historical value, so don’t miss the castle of Santa Bárbara or the old church of Guadalupe.
- Haría. This village, also located in the north of Lanzarote and with a population of over 5,500 inhabitants, boasts the greenest land on the island. It is known as the Valley of the Thousand Palm Trees, as these and other tropical species predominate. This is thanks to its special microclimate, which allows it to be home to most of the island’s native flora.
- Yaiza. It is a village of just over 800 inhabitants located in the southwest of Lanzarote. It was the first place of conquest and the first European enclave in the Canary Islands. It is located on the edge of the area buried by the volcanic eruptions of 1730 and 1736. It is one of the best preserved villages in the archipelago, respecting the traditional architecture and taking care of a unique volcanic landscape.
Map of Lanzarote’s beaches and coves
On a holiday on the island, you must have the best beaches and coves marked in red on your map of Lanzarote, because you can’t leave without a swim in its crystal clear waters! Here we highlight five essential beaches:
- Papagayo Beaches. In Playa Blanca you will find the best beaches on the island, with golden sand and turquoise waters that create a striking contrast. As they are shaped like a bay, there is little swell, making them perfect for relaxing or snorkelling.
- Famara Beach. In the northwest of Lanzarote you have five kilometres of blonde sand and perfect waters for water sports such as surfing or bodyguarding, as the wind and waves are favourable.
- Playa Mujeres. In the heart of the Los Ajaches Natural Park, this beach with turquoise waters and fine sand offers you a special tranquillity. It is not usually crowded even in summer, as it is an almost virgin, wild beach, where you can forget about the world (but not about bringing food!).
- Caletón Blanco. In the north of Lanzarote, in the town of Órzola, you have another great option for relaxing: white sand, volcanic landscape, natural pools… A luxury for your holidays.
- Playa Grande. In Puerto del Carmen you have one of the most popular beaches with all the necessary tourist services for a day’s swimming with the family. All around you will find restaurants and you have a huge sandy area where you can set up your umbrella and enjoy a fun day out.
