What is the Lanzarote Film Festival and what is its aim?
The Lanzarote Film Festival is an event dedicated to the seventh art that focuses on national and international independent cinema.
It is not just a film competition as there are also courses and debates on contemporary cinema.
In addition, other cultural and educational activities take place beyond the cinematographic sphere which aim to connect the island of Lanzarote’s unique character with themes of a universal scope. Outside of the film venues, there are excursions, workshops and educational experiences for young people.
The main objectives of the Lanzarote Film Festival are to promote, exhibit and discuss independent cinema, analyse the local context in which it is developed and connect it at the global level.
When and where does the Lanzarote Film Festival take place?
The Lanzarote Film Festival is usually held annually at the end of the year. The 14th edition of the Lanzarote Film Festival will take place between 23 November and 3 December, 2024.
As usual, it will take place in different municipalities on the island.
What is the main theme of the Lanzarote Film Festival?
It is still too early to reveal the theme chosen for this year as the organisers are still working on it.
What we can say is that, in order to highlight the singularity of Lanzarote that we were talking about before, every year the main themes related to the island are chosen for the event, such as the phenomenon of emigration in 2023 or fishing in 2022.
Who are the organisers of this film event?
The Lanzarote Film Festival is a project organised by the Tenique Cultural Association, a non-profit organisation.
The event was founded in 2011 by Marco Arrocha, Juan Rafael Martínez Curbelo and Víctor Moreno and has radio broadcaster Javier Tolentino and Tenerife film director Víctor Moreno as directors. Since 2018, its artistic and production director has been Javier Fuentes Feo.
How can I participate as a spectator in the Lanzarote Film Festival?
Even if you are not a filmmaker or a participant in the official competition, you can participate as a spectator in the Lanzarote Film Festival. There are numerous activities organised in different parts of the island which are suitable for all audiences.
There are screenings, courses, workshops, conferences and debates. Admission is generally free or at a lower price and all you have to do is register in advance on the festival’s website to reserve a place.
What kind of films are shown at the Lanzarote Film Festival and which filmmakers participate in it?
The Lanzarote Film Festival has two sections:
- The Official Feature Film Section which awards a single Prize for Best Film in the Official Section, worth 6,000 euros.
