CARNIVAL IN LANZAROTE

Carnival is a time of riotous fun and revelry and provides a wonderful excuse to escape from monotonous daily routine, ditch our everyday attire and have some incredible fun.

CARNIVAL HOME COMING SOON - Shrove Tuesday: 12th of February 2013

The carnival is defined as a public celebration that takes place immediately before the Christian Lent, with a date variable that can range from late January until early March depending on the year. This festival combines some elements that make it unmistakable, as costumes, parades and festivities on the street. It was also well known to some festivals of a similar nature at any stage of the year. Despite many of the big differences that presents its celebration throughout the world, a common characteristic is to be a period of permissiveness and some slippage.

Here are the updated programmes of the various carnivals of the island.

ARRECIFE 2012

MONDAY, 20th FEBRUARY

6 pm. Grand Carnival Parade. Starting at the Ciudad Deportiva and ending at the Recinto Ferial Zone.

TUESDAY, 21st FEBRUARY

Shrove Tuesday.

11 am. Carnival of children at the Recinto Ferial, Arrecife.

WEDNESDAY, 22nd FEBRUARY

6 pm. The "Entierro de La Sardina" (The Burial of the Sardines) and fireworks.

PUERTO DEL CARMEN 2012

THURSDAY, 23rd FEBRUARY

6 pm. Children´s Carnival at the Plaza del Varadero (Harbour)

8.0 pm.- Performace of the Murgas (Carnival songs): “Tabletuos” “Simplones”and “Desahuciados” , in Plaza del Varadero (Harbour)

FRIDAY, 24th FEBRUARY

8.30 pm.- Grand Gala performance by the carnival groups: “Los Gruñones” “Chimbay”, “Sur Caliente” and “Guaracheros”, in Plaza del Varadero (Harbour)

After the performance, open-air dance by orchestras “Lanzarote Swing” and “Carlos Chavaud DJ”.

SATURDAY, 25th FEBRUARY

5 pm.- Carnival Parade at the Beach Avenue, starting from Barcarola and ending at Fariones Playa Hotel.

9 pm.- Open-air dance by orchestras “Travesía”, “Rika Banda” and “Lanzarote Swing”, in Plaza del Varadero.

SUNDAY, 26th FEBRUARY

12 Am.- Carnival in the morning with performances by: Pepe Benavente (singer), Rafale Flores “El Morocho” (singer), Batucadas (drum music), Comparsas (carnival dances) and Drag Queen, in Plaza del Varadero.
