What is Montaña Bermeja, where is it and why is it so important in Lanzarote?
Montaña Bermeja is a desert-like volcanic area located to the west of the island of Lanzarote. The black, brown and red tones of the landscape contrast with the green of the Mini Charco Verde which is located next to Montaña Bermeja Beach. It is a spectacular contrast!
The area is located in a fabulous enclave. A little further north, in El Golfo, we find the famous Charco de los Clicos, a lagoon known as Charco de los Verdes because of its intense and striking green colour. It is a must-see when you are exploring Lanzarote.
In fact, Montaña Bermeja is halfway between El Golfo and Las Salinas de Janubio which is another place on the island that is well worth visiting.
It is an area that forms part of Yaiza and there are many options for those who love nature. Its ecological value is unquestionable. At Montaña Bermeja the landscape is so wild that swimming is not recommended on the beach or in the nearby lagoon. For hikers, it is advisable to bring food and water because it is not an area where you will find restaurants or a lot of tourists.
How can I get to Montaña Bermeja?
To find your way to Montaña Bermeja, follow these directions:
- On the road that leads to El Golfo from Las Salinas de Janubio a few kilometres from Los Hervideros, there is a car park where you can leave your car. It is on the right hand side, just opposite the lagoon of Playa Bermeja.
- Once on the road, you can start the route up on foot. As it is well signposted, you won’t get lost.
It is important that, once you see a no trespassing sign, you take heed, as behind it there is a military zone used as a firing range where you won’t want to try your luck.
What is the level of difficulty for climbing or walking on the Montaña Bermeja?
The main hiking route for exploring Montaña Bermeja is two kilometres in length and 100 metres in altitude. Although the hike is only 15 minutes, it is over steep terrain and is quite demanding. But it is well worth the effort!
